The Year is Complete!

Please feel free to look back through the 365 days of 2010 sunrises, but "a year of getting up to meet the day" is officially completed. There will be no more new posts.

Thank you so much for visiting.
A one year blog project in which I share a process of transitions: emptying of the nest, reacquainting with my rusty intellect, plowing onward with my first full length book, entering the second half of my first century, and generally reflecting on life.

howitzers and yoghurt

sunrise:  6:50
sunset at 16:50 today - exactly 10 hours of day, here in mid-Maine.

and here is a question:  which of the following two items appears more threatening to you?

The reason I ask is that one of these came home in my dear husband's checked luggage with no problems.  The other was not allowed past security.  Can you guess?

Avalanche cannons fire into the mountainsides out in Utah most mornings to break up snow fields in a controlled fashion.  Apparently, the spent shell casings just lie around so he picked one up.  The night he and N. got home, he pulled it out of his bag with a triumphant boyish grin - look what I got!

It is one of the most endearing things about J.  It may seem strange that this is what warms my heart, but I love it that my nearly 50 year old husband came home from his ski trip with a howitzer shell.

He had taped a little note on the canister inside his bag - "spent shell casing - for a souvenir," fully expecting it to be confiscated.  Nope, it went right through check in, no problem.  The smell of gunpowder is sharp in the open end.  Seems a little weird to me, and somehow unsettling.

Later he got stopped going through security because there was a 4 ounce yoghurt in his carry-on luggage.  No sir, no yoghurt allowed.  Eat it now or toss it out.  America is safe once more.

  1. Maybe it wouldn't have gone through at another airport. Someone else might have confiscated it.
